Feature Presentation: The Lion King - December 2020 | Design & Paper Spotlight

Let’s Get Literal (LGL) is a fun, interactive series of designs based on “literal” interpretations. LGL combines several things we love – movies, design and creating campaigns that delight and engage people. This year’s calendar theme is MOVIE TITLES and it’s up to the end-user to guess and then check their answers at LetsGetLiteral.com.

December’s design was inspired by a royal Disney classic.

  • Designer: Tony Kukla
  • Movie Title: The Lion King
  • Design Style: Vector illustration
  • Ink: PMS Metallic 8580 + Emboss
  • Paper: Neenah Stardream®, Gold, Smooth, 105C

DESIGNER’S COMMENTARY WITH Tony

For the last two Let’s Get Literal calendar designs, I chose heavy vector illustrations that had a lot of small details and took quite a bit of time to create. This year, I wanted to change that up and create a simpler design that still had a fun feeling to it.

For the LGL song titles design I did 2 years ago, I chose a song that I enjoy (Buffalo Soldier) for inspiration, whereas last year I went with a band that I wasn’t familiar with (Arcade Fire), but made for a cool design concept. Since The Lion King is among the top 3 animated Disney classics I enjoy, I decided to use that for my 2020 LGL movie title design. I’m also a Leo, so it felt especially fitting.

I had a few lion head concepts I came up with and a few different crown options that I let my fellow designers vote on during our first creative review. I still ended up choosing my personal favorite, because I thought the image had a little more character than the group favorite, which was a more symmetrical design.

I decided to use an all-gold color scheme since lions and crowns are typically gold and can both signify royalty. I chose Neenah’s Stardream®, Gold, Smooth. This paper has a nice pearlized sheen to it but isn't over-the-top shiny.

At first I thought about using gold foil for the lion, but the detail and small lines in my design would likely have filled in due to the nature of foil. Instead, I decided to use a dark gold metallic ink for a more subdued approach. I chose to emboss the lion’s crown to give the page dimension and to offer up one more subtle clue.
