Feature Presentation: Space Jam - August 2020 | Design & Paper Spotlight

Let’s Get Literal (LGL) is a fun, interactive series of designs based on “literal” interpretations. LGL combines several things we love – movies, design and creating campaigns that delight and engage people. This year’s calendar theme is MOVIE TITLES and it’s up to the end-user to guess and then check their answers at LetsGetLiteral.com.

August’s design was inspired by shiny stars and paper, and possibly hungry designers.

  • Designer: Maggie / Amy
  • Movie Title: Space Jam
  • Design Style: Photo manipulation
  • Ink: 4 Color Process Digital
  • Paper: Neenah STARDREAM® Silver Smooth for HP 105C

Designer’s Commentary with Amy

We were so fortunate to have a wonderful design intern, Maggie, working in our department when we started concepting for our favorite project, the Sigler promotional calendar. She chose the movie Space Jam and her design started out with an illustrated astronaut listening to headphones with floating music notes against a nebula sky. As she continued to push the design, another iteration was a simple, more realistic jam jar with the nebula sky within it and a piece of toast with a blob of "spacey" jam.

Before she could finalize the design, Maggie’s internship came to an end and she had to return to school. We were so sad to see her go! At this point, I took over for Maggie and loved the direction it was going. In the interim, the artwork and paper for the other months had been finalized and I felt like her design needed to be pushed in a slightly different direction. I kept the jam jar and the toast and added a photograph of an astronaut floating in orbit. I added a butter knife into his hand, so it looked like he just finished spreading the jam on his breakfast. I felt like this added a bit of humor to the design.

Since showing off different papers was one of the highlights of this calendar, I thought it would be cool to show how a full color photograph looks when digitally printed on a silver sheet. I chose Neenah’s STARDREAM® Silver Smooth for HP. It's proof that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a great looking design – though spending MORE on specialty paper can make a design truly out-of-this-world! I am really happy with the way it turned out and hope that Maggie is too!
