Feature Presentation: Silence of the Lambs - March 2021 | Design & Paper Spotlight

Let’s Get Literal (LGL) is a fun, interactive series of designs based on “literal” interpretations. LGL combines several things we love – movies, design and creating campaigns that delight and engage people. This year’s calendar theme is MOVIE TITLES and it’s up to the end-user to guess and then check their answers at LetsGetLiteral.com.

March’s design was inspired by the horrors in sheep’s clothing.

DESIGNER’S COMMENTARY WITH AMY

 

In my opinion, Silence of the Lambs has to be one of the most disturbing horror movies of all time! To contrast the creepiness, I created an illustration that was the exact opposite, starting with two adorable little lambs. The lambs themselves are benign and cute, drawn in a vintage cartoonish style, but the duct tape adds that "creepy factor" to the image. The word Shhhhhhh! further emphasizes the silence implied by the duct tape. 

 

 
 

 

To enhance the vintage style, I chose Neenah’s Royal Sundance® Balsa paper. It's a beautiful neutral paper that contains fiber flecks. To add even more age and depth to the design, I placed a grunge texture as a base. To draw attention to the duct tape, I used a realistic photo adding a clear holographic foil after printing to mimic the shiny silver finish.



 

I really like the way this illustration turned out and how the paper elevated the aesthetic.
